Who knows! You are not alone in this, as it turns out many keen gardeners have the same worries.
So, whether you want to find out if grass grows at night if it can grow by much in a 24 hour period, or even if you should be watering it at night, this is the perfect article for you that will answer just that.
Does Grass Grow At Night?
First and foremost, your main question is likely to be ‘does grass grow at night?’. That’s a great question! After all, oftentimes, when you are waiting for your newly seeded lawn to grow we keenly go and look outside as soon as day breaks to see if it has made progress.
But is this pointless? Does it really grow overnight? Surely it needs sun to grow..and we all know that nighttime has a distinct lack of sun.
Well….I am happy to tell you that whilst the sun is essential in the growth of any plant, in the case of grass, it can still grow during the night. The reason for this is because the grass would have spent all day in the sun gaining energy.
This means that it can grow constantly, provided they have had the right amount of sun during the day and ofcourse water, as well as any additional extras such as fertilizer that they may need.
As well as this, it is worth bearing in mind that grass needs heat to grow. Of course, this typically comes from the sun.
However, if you are in a warmer climate that gets particularly balmy, hot evenings, you may well find that the nighttime provides more than enough heat for optimal growing conditions.
So, do not expect growth to only occur in the morning or in the sun, because grass, as with all plants tends to grow when they like and it is certainly possible for them to grow at night!
Is It Better To Water Grass At Night?
Contrary to popular belief, it is actually not recommended that you water your grass at night.
We get why you would think this for sure, but actually, professionals and experts have worked out that the perfect time for watering the grass is actually in the day.
In fact, they have even figured out a specific time frame in which you should water your grass for the optimal result.
This time is none other than early in the morning, preferably before 10 am and certainly before midday. It should be when the sun has risen, so any time between 6 am and 10 am is perfect!
The reason for this very specific time frame is because your grass will be able to have plenty of time to soak up the water before the sun gets too high and too hot.
Watering the grass after this time often means that the water will be evaporated by the hot sun before the grass has had the chance to take in what it needs.
Watering the grass at night may seem like a sensible idea as there is no sun to evaporate it quickly.
However, it works in the opposite way at night because the lack of sun means that the water can stay on the lawn too long, sitting on top of it. This makes it more susceptible to lawn disease if done too often.
Does Grass Grow In The Dark?
In a similar fashion to grass growing at night, you may well be wondering if grass can also grow in the dark. Now, this may not necessarily refer to nighttime as such, because for some people, they may live in a place that gets very little natural sunlight, especially in the winter months.
However, don’t fret because even though it will be more difficult, it is certainly not impossible for grass to grow in the dark.
Sunlight is, of course, the best way to help them grow, but if they only get a small amount, it is still possible to get a luscious lawn – it may just require a little more patience. Just ensure that they get even a small amount of sunlight every day.
Only plant grass seed if you know that at least some sun will reach it, even for just a few hours a day.
